About ScienceUnplugged

Me and a giraffe. Deal with it.
I’ll try to keep this as unlongwinded as possible. Is that a word? Probably not, but it should be.

Anyway, this page is to tell you a little bit about myself and this blog. How would I describe myself? Well, this is the internet so I can say anything, like I’m a swashbuckling scientist super-secret agent who heals the sick, tends to the needy and helps the elderly cross roads in his spare time. But accuracy is pretty important in science, so I’m a depressed and slightly disillusioned science student.

I started this blog out of a kind of frustration with the scientific community. I got fed up of seeing academics who are only interested in increasing their own renown and have lost (if they ever had it to begin with) their passion for science and learning about the world and its many mysteries. For all I could see, the world of academic science is merely one of elitism and hunger for status and renown, and those who have a genuine passion for their work are ridiculed and looked down upon by their colleagues.

In my brief time as a postgraduate research student I have heard fascination and enthusiasm for science mocked and discouraged, seen students brutally discouraged when giving presentations and seen a general disinterest in learning and teaching science. I have started this site in the hope that I can tell people about interesting and exciting things from the world of science and technology without wrapping it up in pretentious terms and elitism and just talking about things because it is fun and interesting and stimulating simply to know them, simply to satisfy curiosity.

So please, enjoy my site.

Adam
